What is a motion detector and how does it work?

Most people think about alarm or unformed guards when they think about the security and well being of the place. However, with the advancement in the way burglars give shape to their actions these days, CCTV or other forms of devices most often fail to provide security. This is where the need for advanced security devices has come up and one of the most reliable products in this regard is motion detectors.

A motion detector or a motion sensor is an electronic device that uses a sensor to alert you if they detect any movement in its vicinity. It has the ability to detect and capture movements in real time. These motion sensors are primarily used in home and commercial security systems but can also be found in virtual reality systems.

How does a motion sensor work?

Depending on the capability of the motion sensor, it can detect movement within the space set up. It is usually linked to a system or software that processes the motion into action. There are different types of motion sensor technology. However, the two popular ones are active motion sensors and passive motion sensors.

An active sensor is named active as it acts as both a transmitter and a receiver. This type of sensor emits traditions to detect a motion. The motion detector works by measuring the difference in the energy transmitted and received after being reflected by any object. The detector meanwhile keeps on sending and receiving the waves until there is any interruption in its path by a moving object. When an object interrupts, the number of waves reflecting back gets affected which in turn interacts with the mechanical component. The sensor gets triggered and completes the entire action, whether it is sounding an alarm or switching on a  light.

Unlike an active motion sensor, passive motion sensors do not emit any radiation. The sensor detects motions based on the increase of radiation in its environment. PIR infrared sensor is the most common type of passive motion sensor used in home security systems. The best part about installing a passive motion detector is that it can identify the objects without being in physical contact. When a person walks into the detection field of PIR, the change in the infrared level sends an electric signal to the embedded hardware components.

There is no doubt that along with door and window sensors, motion detectors are an essential home security essential. Regardless of the type of motion detector you choose, they will alert you if any unauthorized person tries to enter your premises. All of them mostly rely on similar technologies to detect intruders.
